PM Modi today intervened during the Goods and Services Tax or GST debate in Lok Sabha - which was sent back to the lower house after passed in Rajya Sabha last week - and said GST meant 'Great Step Towards Transformation'. The GST Bill that amends the constitution to enable the GST reform was passed in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha unanimously.

  • If our services are strong, even the people with wrong intentions will be forces to fall in line.
  • Indian buyers/sellers have a habit of dealing with fake/real bill. GST will change that.

  • We all have the will to fight poverty. We may have different ways to tackle it.
  • GST will enable every seller to have an account of his business. Banks will have no reason to deny them loans. GST's biggest strength is technology, real time data.

The states which are considered to be underdeveloped will benefit from GST: PM

  • If these states want to fund education, manufacturing etc. will benefit.
  • The eastern states which are considered backwards or underdeveloped need to be pushed to the forefront in nation's development.
  • Yes, consumer states will benefit more, but the Centre will compensate the manufacturing states as stated in the GST bill.

GST will give security to small scale manufacturers. They are the strength of our nation. The more we secure them, the more this country will benefit.

When I see the GST Bill from the eyes of a chief minister, after becoming the prime minister, I am able to understand the position of states better: PM Modi

  • The credit does not go to me, it does to all of us.
  • We are able to remove many gaps in the bill.
  • I would like to thank all the political parties that have come together for us to see this day.
  • Didn't want GST to be passed via majority but consensus.

  • But Congress is now here extending full support for GST
  • This House has been taken for a junior party.

Future road map is that this is an enabling amendment. Three more laws have to be created. Two of those have to come before Parliament: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on GST Bill

If one pays tax at one stage, they wont have to give another tax on that tax component. So tax on tax will be eradicated: Arun Jaitley in Lok Sabha
