Arvind Kejriwal today responded to exit polls predicting an abysmal result for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Gujarat - where the party had mounted a grand campaign to challenge the ruling BJP - and a roaring victory in Delhi civic polls.
An aggregate of exit polls yesterday predicted an AAP sweep in the Delhi civic body election but a flop show in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
In Gujarat, AAP will win eight of 182 seats, staying well below the Congress (38 with allies). With a glitzy and energetic campaign, the party had pitched itself as the alternative to the Congress as main opposition in the state.
AAP leaders claimed the polls would be proved wrong and the party would, in fact, win closer to 100 seats.
"The results are positive," said Arvind Kejriwal.
"For a new party to get 15 to 20 per cent vote share, that too in a BJP stronghold, is a big deal," the Delhi Chief Minister remarked.
"Wait till day after tomorrow (counting day)."
The poll of polls projected that AAP would win big in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, ending the BJP's 15-year reign in the first election since the re-unification of the municipal corporations.
"I congratulate the people of Delhi. The exit polls showed that the people of Delhi have once again put their faith in AAP. I hope this will be the result...We will wait till tomorrow," Mr Kejriwal.
