Gujarat Election Result Highlights: PM Modi meets Amit Shah after BJP reduced to double digits in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: For the Gujarat Assembly election, counting day has been full of twists and turns, ups and downs, cheers and celebrations, and quite a few nail biting moments. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP, which came to power in Gujarat for the sixth time, faced a tough battle against a renewed Congress under the leadership of newly elected party president Rahul Gandhi. The BJP, whose chief Amit Shah, had set a target of 150 plus seats for the party in the 182-seat assembly, faced a greater challenge that they probably expected. Counting of votes began at 8 am this morning. Usually on election counting day, results are more or less known by midday, but today's contest between the BJP and the Congress kept everyone guessing the margin of victory till late evening. The Congress which is seen to gain nearly twenty seats compared to the 2012 assembly elections secured 77 seats. The BJP, though seen to be getting a majority mandate, has been reduced to double digits and finished with 99 seats, down sixteen. Campaigns in Gujarat, both by the BJP and the Congress, were high-pitched and bitterly-fought. The BJP has been ruling in Gujarat for the last two decades and today's win is being seen as a significant one ahead of the 2019 general elections. The BJP also won in Himachal Pradesh. Gujarat Election Result: Who Said What After BJP Wins Clear Majority In Gujarat Assembly

Vijay Rupani, Gujarat Chief Minister: "BJP's victory in the Assembly elections showed people's unshakable faith in the agenda of development, caste-less and classless society. I acknowledge with humility people's verdict who have voted for BJP and reposed faith in the politics of good governance - a dominant theme flourished by Prime Minister Modi on the Indian political landscape."

Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa spoke about newly-elected Congress chief Rahul Gandhi: "In his opening innings he has scored a zero".

Nirmala Sitharaman, Defence Minister: "Undoubtedly, a major victory. The kind of work which Party workers have done right from booth workers level till PM's level, everybody put their best foot forward. People of Gujarat have recognised the good work going on in the state."

Smriti Irani, Union Minister: "It is a matter of happiness for us, this is the victory of development. Jo jeeta wohi sikandar. It is victory of every booth worker's hard work & the people who trusted development".

Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister: "I had already said this would happen. A change of guard in the Congress leadership will be a good sign for the BJP. That aside, people have rejected divisive politics of Congress, this win is due to the dynamic leadership of BJP and the hard work of BJP workers".

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister: "All sections of society have voted above caste politics. This is a win of development politics of the Prime Minister. In Gujarat, OBC, patidar, dalit all were used for caste politics by the Congress but caste politics could not get success. People have approved of our policies and work done under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his development agenda. As far as Rahul Gandhi is concerned, after he became Congress president, he has lost Himachal Pradesh and could not bring the Congress in power to Gujarat."

Vasundhara Raje, Rajasthan Chief Minister: "The people of Gujarat have once again voted for development. They once again reposed faith in the BJP leadership. It shows there is no alternative to the BJP in the country.

Ashish Shelar, Mumbai BJP chief: The election results have proven that the 'bullet train' of development, under PM Modi's leadership, has emerged victorious. The opposition, which violated all campaign norms have been shown their place by the people."

Gujarat Election Result Analysis: How BJP And Congress Fared - A Comparison Of Vote Shares

The BJP's vote share in Gujarat has slumped sharply since the 2014 general election when it got nearly 60 per cent votes, while that of Congress has improved significantly, but wasn't enough to win the sufficient number of seats needed to form a government.

As per the results declared today by the Election Commission, the BJP has got close to 49.1 per cent votes, down from nearly 60 per cent in 2014 but somewhat higher than nearly 48 per cent it polled in the 2012 state assembly polls. On the other hand, Congress' vote share has risen to about 41.4 per cent this time - up from 33 per cent in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and also higher than around 39 per cent in the 2012 assembly election.

The difference in vote share between the two parties works out to be around 7.7 per cent, in line with a shrinking gap witnessed since the 2007 assembly election in the state. In 2007, the BJP's vote share was 49.12 per cent as against 39.63 per cent of the Congress, the gap being 9.49 per cent. This gap had reduced to 9 per cent in 2012.

The difference in vote share was nearly 30 per cent in 2014, the year BJP stormed to power at the centre, riding a pan-India 'Narendra Modi wave' and had won all seats from Gujarat. After a complete rout in 2014, the Congress has improved its performance while its seat tally has also improved from the 2012 levels.

As per the results declared today, the independents have scored 4.3 per cent votes in Gujarat, while 1.8 per cent voters opted for NOTA (None of the above). No party other than Congress and the BJP could get even 1 per cent votes.

Gujarat Election Result 2017 - PM Narendra Modi Addresses Party Workers And Supports
  • First and foremost, I bow to the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for kicking our corruption and shunning caste politics.
  • Before the Uttar Pradesh election they predicted our doom, and said similar things in Gujarat. But you proved them worn then, and you have proven them wrong again.
  • Such predictions don't help anyone, they only hurts the country. These results show that the country is ready for reform, and rewards performance and is keen to be transformed. It shows that the people have rejected divisive and casteist politics and chose development and progress instead.
  • Aspirations of India's middle class are really high today. There was a time when people were content with what they had. Today's India walks with new dreams in their eyes, has new hope. And they show that if you don't perform, if you indulge in misdeeds, people won't accept you in five years.
  • Gujarat elections are an unprecedented election in BJP's history. Today, if any government returns after 5 years, it is considered a big win in editorials. Any government coming back to power has been a huge event in the last 30 years. Gujarat is unique. It fights 12 elections in a row and it wins all of them. These consecutive victories and that too only based on development and good governance shows a new direction in India's politics.
  • For me the Gujarat victory is twice a reason to be happy. Personally, for me it is a reason because after a leader steps away there are all kinds of talk and people are demoralised, but the way BJP workers took control of the state, this for me is a reason for double the happiness. The second, that after me my colleagues spared no effort in the progress of Gujarat.
  • There were all kinds of talks before the Gujarat elections. They hatched all kinds of conspiracies, said just make them lose once. They made fun of development and sincere work done over the years. This hadn't happened before.
  • Elections come and go in India. Every election is painted in a different way. The truth is, that in May 2014 after the national elections, there has been an environment of development, there has been a hunger for development. Development has become a priority for my government.
  • You may not like the BJP, but please do not do anything to derail the country's development. You can celebrate as much as you want after BJP loses, but no matter what the result, don't hurt the country. This government is one that works only for development. The results today endorse that fact.
  • Casteism was so prevalent in Gujarat that it took workers like us 30 years to free Gujarat from its clutches. But some people, out of hunger for power, in the last few months tried to sow the seeds of casteism again. But people of Gujarat rejected them, for this they deserve congratulations. However, people of Gujarat will need to be more cautious about divisive politics and caste-based politics from now on. They have to be careful not to fall in that trap.
  • 6.5 crore Gujaratis are united, noble and want to go ahead together. I appeal to them to embrace each other and move ahead together. Some people tried to play their games, they are unlikely to stop it now. They will keep trying to divide the people based on castes and religion. So, with the motto of unity, I ask you to walk ahead today, because Gujarat's progress helps the country too.
  • Gujarat cannot stay behind in the development of the country. You all have a part to play. Please don't leave anyone behind. Move ahead with the motto of 'sabka saath, sabka vikas'.
  • Our party chief's efforts, strategy, and ability to recognise hard work has brought us here. To win in a state continuously since 1989 is a one-of-a-kind thing in the world.
  • There is no need to waste time arguing with those who cannot stand the BJP winning. Haters will hate. We should focus on work. We are workers, not haters. Come, lets work hard to realise the dreams of those who fought for our freedom. We may not have got the privilege to be part of India's freedom movement, but lets not waste the chance to work for a great future for India. I want you to repeat after me... Jitega bhai jitega, vikas hi Jitega... This is our motto.

Gujarat Election Result 2017 - PM Modi, Amit Shah Meet; Address BJP Workers And Supporters
  • Say Bharat Mata Ki Jai. Your voice should reach from the mountains of Himachal Pradesh to the shores of Gujarat.
  • These wins are not isolated wins. Prime Minister Modi's development and good governance model that he started in 2014 has taken two more steps. In 2014, BJP had 6 CMs, today we have 14 CMs and 19 governments.
  • Have got complete majority in Gujarat and 2/3 majority in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Congress tried to fan castiest divides in Gujarat, used derogatory words against PM Modi, but this result shows what people think of them.
  • This trend will also continue in Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Karnataka, which go to polls soon.

Gujarat Election Result 2017 - BJP Chief Amit Shah Addresses The Media On Election Results
  • It is a day of great joy for the BJP. BJP is forming govt both in Himachal and Gujarat.
  • I thank the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for choosing development over caste politics.
  • This win is due to hard work of the countless workers of the BJP and PM Modi's pro-people policies.
  • Dyansty, casteism and appeasement has lost to development and good governance.
  • These results prove country is moving beyond those three evils to politics of performance.
  • In Gujarat, we are going to form government for the sixth time.
  • The most prominent leaders of Cong have lost because they were trying to divide the people on the basis of religion and caste.
  • The Congress' attempt to fight elections through outsourcing has failed.
  • The people of Gujarat have reposed their faith on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and rejected the Congress' divisive politics. They have rejected efforts that were made by the Congress to instigate people and divide them on the basis of caste and religion.
  • There was an attempt to bring down level of discourse throughout campaign.
  • You all can see what happened in Himachal Pradesh, where Congress was in power. The people have rejected them as they wanted to join PM Modi's development yatra.
  • BJP has continuously improved its standing in national politics.
  • Today BJP has 14 chief ministers and is part of 5 other ruling alliances; governs 19 states across the country.
  • Four states are going to polls next. I'm sure that BJP will win under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • For the BJP's vote share to not fall after so many years in Gujarat is a remarkable feat. I would like to thank all the party workers once again. They have worked very very hard throughout.
  • The only thing responsible for our fewer seats is the dragging down of the level of discourse and fueling casteism... go ask the ones who did it.
  • We were on the receiving end of loose talk and baseless allegations. Can we not respond to such words against the prime minister?
  • Yes, I admit we got fewer seats than we hoped. Lowering the level of the campaign will have some effect, wouldn't it? And instigating people on castes? That had its effect on the result.
