More than 130 people died on Sunday after a colonial-era footbridge packed with sightseers collapsed in Gujarat's Morbi town, only a week after renovations had been completed. The cable bridge snapped due to a heavy rush of people, sources in India's top forensic laboratory have said.

A day after the tragedy, nine people have been arrested. Among them are managers of Oreva, the company that renovated the bridge, ticket collectors, bridge repair contractors and three security guards whose job was to control the crowds.

PM Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister Visit Cable Bridge Collapse Site
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Morbi in Gujarat on Tuesday after the cable suspension bridge claimed the lives of at least 135 people.

The Prime Minister was briefed on the rescue and relief operations that have been underway ever since the unfortunate mishap took place in Morbi. All aspects relating to the tragedy were discussed.

Gujarat Bridge Tragedy: Deep Divers Deployed After Bodies Suspected On River Floor
"We resumed the search and rescue operations today. It is suspected that some bodies may be there on the floor of the river, so we resumed the operation with the help of our deep divers," VVN Prasanna Kumar, NDRF Commandant.

Morbi district collector told news agency ANI that one more person succumbed to their injuries at the district hospital which takes the death count to 135. 14 people are still hospitalised. One person is still reported to be missing and the search for him is on.

An all-night spruce up at the civil hospital in Gujarat's Morbi ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit today to meet the survivors of the massive bridge collapse tragedy that left 134 dead has drawn criticism from the Opposition.

The Prime Minister will be in Morbi this morning in the aftermath of the horrifying collapse of the cable suspension bridge across the Machchhu river. Of the 134 people killed, 47 were children. Over a 100 injured are being treated, many of them at the Morbi civil hospital.
