Narhari Amin
Ahmedabad:
In an attempt to suppress resentment in its Gujarat unit over ticket distribution for the upcoming elections in the state, senior Congress leader and Union Minister Rajiv Shukla today met Narhari Amin, party's senior leader in the state. The Congress has denied a ticket to Mr Amin, a former Deputy Chief Minister, who was expecting to contest from Gandhinagar South constituency. In retaliation, Mr Amin had asked his supporters to resign from their posts in the party and local bodies.
Sticking to its policy of not nominating those who have lost two elections, the Congress had decided not field Mr Amin in the Gujarat assembly elections this month.
"We have called for a meeting in Ahmedabad tomorrow. People who deserved a ticket and did not get one, we will meet them tomorrow. We will discuss and decide everything after the meeting tomorrow," Mr Shukla told reporters after his meeting with Narhari.
There have been reports that the disgruntled leader has been approached by the BJP, and the Congress is trying to prevent another leader switching to the opposition camp. Mr Amin is expected to take a final call on his decision to quit after this meeting.
Lending their support to Mr Amin, who yields considerable influence in the state's Patel community, his supporters submitted their resignations to Gujarat Congress chief Arjun Modhwadia yesterday. City Congress chief Pankaj Shah, along with 18 municipal councillors, and 40 ward presidents submitted their resignations.
"I have told the party leadership that I will not campaign for any Congress candidate," he told his supporters yesterday.
