Gujarat Police fired 70 rounds at Ishrat, three others, says CBI chargesheet
Ahmedabad: Five cops of the Ahmedabad Crime Branch had fired 70 rounds from automatic and semi-automatic weapons at 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan and three others, the CBI has said in its chargesheet on the encounter, which it alleges was staged.

After Ishrat and the others were dead, crime branch commando Mohan Kalasawa allegedly fired from an AK-56 automatic assault rifle to establish that there was an exchange of fire. The AK-56, says the CBI, was then planted on Amjad Ali Rana, one of the men who was shot dead along with Ishrat Jahan on June 15, 2004.

Of the five policemen that the CBI says shot at Ishrat and the others - N K Amin, J G Parmar, Tarun Barot, Mohan Kalasawa and Anaju Jiman Choudhary - Kalasawa has since died. Of those who fired, only Amin remains in jail while others got bail.

The CBI alleges that when two cops, IK Chauhan and Commando Mohan Nanji, refused to fire, Mohan Kalasawa and Tarun Barot snatched their weapons and shot at the group. Investigations have allegedly revealed that Kalasawa first fired 32 rounds from his AK-47 automatic rifle and then snatched Nanji's gun and fired another 10 rounds.

Amin fired five rounds from his 9 mm pistol, Parmar fired four rounds from his revolver, Barot fired all six bullets of his revolver and also fired three rounds from Chouhan's revolver and Choudhary fired 10 rounds from his stengun, the CBI says.

Mr Amin and Mr Barot have also been accused by the CBI of abducting Ishrat Jahan, who was on her way to Ahmebadad with Javed Sheikh, also killed in the encounter, in his blue Indica MH-02 JA 4786 on June 12, 2004, three days before they were shot dead.

Ishrat and Javed, the CBI has said, were picked up by the cops from a toll booth at Vasad in Anand district and kept in illegal custody at a farm in Ahmedabad, where they were interrogated.

On the day of encounter, the chargesheet details, several cops reached the Indira Bridge Circle at around 1.30 am. At about 4 am, Ishrat, Javed and another man called Zeeshan were allegedly brought to the encounter site by two police officers in Javed's blue Indica, while Amjad Ali Rana was brought separately in a white Qualis.

A cop, Mohammed Shafi, drove Javed's car and then, as allegedly directed by Mr Amin, parked it across a road divider and shifted Javed to the driver's seat. The cops then opened fired, killing all four instantly.

After the shooting, the crime branch sent out alerts that four suspected terrorists had been gunned down.
