The first phase of the Assembly elections in Gujarat saw 62.9% voter turnout on Thursday. 89 assembly seats went to polls yesterday, including the key region of Surat. Surat is known to be a BJP stronghold but the Aam Aadmi Party has campaigned extensively in the district, and party supremo Arvind Kejriwal has said they hope to win at least half of the 16 segments there.

Gujarat Polls: Campaigning For 2nd Phase To Conclude; Voting From Monday
The campaigning for the second phase of elections in 93 out of the total 182 seats in Gujarat will end this evening. BJP will hold roadshows and rallies of their star campaigners including UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will hold poll rallies in Dholka, Mahudha and Khambhat towns while Union minister Smriti Irani will hold roadshows in Modasa and Siddhpur.

Gujarat Polls: Overall Voter Turnout Recorded At 62.9% For First Phase
The voting in the first phase of the Gujarat Assembly election culminated on Thursday as the overall voter turnout was recorded at 62.9%. This represents a 4.4% dip in the voter turnout as compared to 2017 when 67.3% voter turnout was recorded. According to the data from the Election Commission of India, Narmada recorded the highest voter turnout at 78.24% and Botad recorded the lowest at 57.58%.

Arjun Modhwadia, Congress candidate from Gujarat's Porbandar constituency, today cast his vote during the first phase of polling in the assembly election. Before casting his vote, Mr Modhwadia told reporter that even the BJP is aware of the "people's resolution to remove BJP".
"People have taken a resolve to remove the BJP. The BJP knows about it that is why they changed the cabinet, including the Chief Minister, a year ago. There were allegations of corruption against them and now the new government is also functioning similarly. Hence, people are in a mood for change which they have created themselves," Mr Modhwadia said.
