Over 100 people have so far died in Gujarat due to heat stroke forcing the state administration to push panic buttons. And government hospitals are still registering increasing number of heat stroke cases.

Mehul, who runs a paan shop, was brought to the V S Hospital in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. She is one of the 40-odd patients of heat stroke at this hospital.

The doctors are trying to cool off heat stroke patients like Mehul by laying them on a bed of ice.

"The body temperature is so high that we have to compulsorily use these ice slabs so that the temperature is brought down," said Dr Jitendra Parmar, RMO, V S Hospital.

In Ahmedabad, 40 heat deaths have forced the administration to sit up and act. Hoardings and public announcements urge people not to venture out during the day.

"We are urging people not to venture out between 11 am and 5 pm because that is the peak period of heat. Also, through publicity, we are trying to urge them to have maximum liquids like lemon water," said Mayur Dave, Chairman, Municipal Corporation Committee.

The mercury has consistently remained at 44 degrees in Ahmedabad and even touched 48 in several parts of North Gujarat. The only good news is that the Met department has predicted a drop in temperature due to Westerly winds.
