Ahmedabad:
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) enquiring into the 2002 Gujarat riots on March 27.
According to sources in the SIT, Modi has verbally indicated this, though this has not been given in writing.
It may also not be revealed where he will be questioned. Questioning may not happen in the SIT office due to security concerns.
On Monday, confusion prevailed over the date of Modi's appearance in the summons issued by the SIT after Modi, in a letter addressed to the nation said, "SIT had not fixed March 21, 2010 for my appearance. To say that I was summoned on March 21 is completely false. I shall respond to the SIT fully respecting the law and keeping in view the dignity of a body appointed by the Supreme Court".(Read: Modi's full statement)
On March 11, SIT chairman R K Raghavan had said that the SIT had summoned Modi on March 21.
Last week, the SIT asked Modi to appear before it in the case of Ehsan Jafri. A formerCongress MP, Jafri was burnt alive in the infamous Gulbarg Societyriots of February, 2002. Jafri's wife, Zakia, has in the Supreme Courtaccused Modi and his colleagues of conspiring in the communal riotsthat left more than 1000 people dead that year. Zakia alleges that Modiand senior ministers asked bureaucrats and senior policemen not torespond to calls for help by those being attacked. (Read: Riot panel still waiting for Narendra Modi)
In his passionate letter, Modi has said that there is a conspiracy to project him as a law-breaker. "They wanted to paint me as a person who refused to respond to the SIT."
