Hariyali Teej was celebrated by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi on Saturday. Vice President Naidu posted a series of tweets and pictures of the celebrations. He also wished the country on the occasion. Teej is observed on the third day of Shukla Paksha (fortnight) in the Hindu month of Bhadrapad. This year, Teej is observed on August 13.
"Delighted to be with members of Delhi Study Group and participate in "Sawan Teej Festival", in New Delhi today. Festivals like Teej teach us to live with the nature. Living and Loving the nature and protecting our culture are key aspects of our philosophy. #TeezFestival," Venkaiah Naidu tweeted on Saturday.
At an event celebrating Teej in the capital where the Vice President was the guest of honour, he was seen sitting on a swing and posing with a group of women. Vice President Naidu also watched a dance performance and addressed the audience during the celebrations.
Teej is celebrated is north India to commemorate the day when Lord Shiva accepted Goddess Parvati's love for him.
Ghewar, a traditional sweet, is made specially in this season and is Teej's special dessert. Kheer, malpua, halwa are other traditional dishes that are prepared on this day.
Traditionally, gifts are sent to the daughter's house by her mother and in-laws, husbands and other family members give gifts to girls and women of the house. Some daughters also visit their parents house and return after Raksha Bandhan.
In Rajasthan, during Teej, Goddess Parvati is worshipped. While the Teej idol is covered with a canopy, the Gangaur idol is open.
