Chandigarh:
With khap or community panchayats in Haryana being debated across the country, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has supported their role.
Defending them, he said khaps were not responsible for honour killings. Hooda also added that marriage within the same gotra was not part of the tradition in Haryana.
The statement comes days after a khap mahapanchayat has issued a fresh warning to couples marrying in the same gotra saying they will be forcefully separated.
At a meeting in Garhmukteshwar, over 100 village mahapanchayat members discussed the issue of same gotra marriages. They decided that such marriages will not be tolerated at any cost and the couples will be separated forcefully if they get married against their diktat.
The Khap panchayat also demanded amendment in Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, disallowing marriages between same gotra. Khap Panchayats have been facing flak from all quarters for denouncing marriages among same clan couples.
