Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, along with his ministerial colleagues and party legislators from the state, pedalled to the Haryana assembly on the last day of the monsoon session on Wednesday.
Although it was a symbolic gesture, the lawmakers shunning their fuel-guzzling cars should set an example for the masses.
Sporting a kurta-payjama and half-jacket, Mr Khattar used a cycle from his official residence in Sector-3 in Chandigarh to the Haryana assembly complex, covering just over one kilometre.
Mr Khattar said:"This is good for the environment. People should use cycles at least for a day."
Some ministers in his cabinet and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmakers also followed him.
Haryana's Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) Shyam Singh Rana pedalled a cycle-rickshaw to the assembly. He carried CPS Seema Trikha and Political Advisor to the Chief Minister Jagdish Chopra on his rickshaw.
Some other legislators took e-rickshaws (electronic rickshaws) to reach the assembly.
Asked if the one-day symbolic gesture would be of any help, Haryana agriculture minister OP Dhankar said: "This is a motivational step. People will feel that if the head of a state and political leaders can do it, why can't others."
Haryana has a BJP government since October 2014.
