New Delhi: An IAS officer has been arrested in Delhi for allegedly planning the murder of an associate.
Sanjeev Kumar, a 1985 batch Haryana officer, was arrested this morning along with three gangsters and weapons.
The police say Mr Kumar had tried to arrange the murder of a close friend and businessman over a property dispute. He was caught when the contract killer he hired revealed the plan to the police.
Mr Kumar was sentenced to 10 years in jail in 2013 for the illegal recruitment of thousands of teachers in Haryana, a case in which former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay were also convicted. The officer was seen as a whistleblower when he complained against the Chautalas, but was later implicated in the same scam.
The police allege that the officer plotted his friend's murder when he was in Tihar jail in Delhi last year. There he reportedly met gangster Shoukat Pasha, who promised to help him.
Mr Kumar allegedly faked an injury to get bail on medical grounds and then started pursuing his plan.
Sources say he hired a contract killer who happened to be an informer to a senior police officer. He reportedly accepted the deal and took some token money from the officer before passed on the information to the police.
