Hasina visit a new direction for Indo-Bangla ties

New Delhi: India has described Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit as "pathbreaking".

In a significant step in that direction, New Delhi has announced transit links through India for Bangladesh to Nepal and Bhutan -- a long-standing demand by all three smaller neighbours to enable easier trade.

The big turnaround in ties, which have often been strained, comes thanks to Hasina's crackdown on anti-Indian insurgent groups like the Ulfa and Harkat-ul-jihad-e-islami (HUJI).

During a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sheikh Hasina, five agreements were signed, including an agreement on terrorism, organised crime, transfer of sentenced persons and a MoU on power sharing.

After years of mistrust, the relationship between New Delhi and Bangladesh is finally showing some progress.

In another gesture of thanks for the crackdown on terror groups, New Delhi is also expected to hand over 20 Bangladeshi fugitives soon.
