The Hathras victim was cremated in the middle of the night "to avoid large-scale violence" the next morning, the Uttar Pradesh government told the Supreme Court today, citing intelligence inputs of "major law and order problems". In an affidavit to the Supreme Court, the UP government also justified the 2.30 am cremation saying there was a high alert in the district because of the Babri mosque verdict a day later.
A Special Investigation Team or SIT probing the alleged gang rape and torture in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras of a young Dalit woman, who died last week, reached her village this morning. The probe panel, formed by the Yogi Adityanath government visited the site of the crime and will submit its report tomorrow.

Left Parties Demand Supreme Court-Monitored Independent Probe Into Hathras Rape Case
A joint delegation of Left-wing parties, after visiting the Hathras victim's family today, have raised the demand for Supreme Court-monitored independent judicial inquiry and also requested the Uttar Pradesh government to not try to divert from the principal issue, reported news agency ANI. Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) general secretary, Sitaram Yechury, Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary, D Raja, and CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat, Amarjit Kaur, and others met the family today at their home in Hathras.

Hathras Incident Horrible, Says Supreme Court
Terming as "horrible" the Hathras incident, the Supreme Court Tuesday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to inform it by October 8 about the steps taken to protect witnesses in the case in which a Dalit girl was allegedly brutally raped and died due to injuries. The top court directed the Yogi Adityanath government to file an affidavit in this regard and also ascertain whether the victim's family has chosen a lawyer.
Supreme Court Asks UP For Update On Witness Protection In Hathras Case
Questions regarding the protection of the family of the 20-year-ol woman from Hathras who was tortured and allegedly gang raped, came up before the Supreme Court today. The court issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government, questioning what steps have been taken to protect the family and witnesses in the case. Read Here
Supreme Court asks Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, to inform it how the witnesses in the Hathras case, are being protected. Supreme Court adjourns the matter for next week.
Hathras Hearing Begins in Supreme Court

UP Government Urges Supreme Court To Direct CBI Probe In Hathras Case
The UP government today urged the Supreme Court to direct a CBI probe into the alleged gang-rape and death of a Dalit woman in Hathras, saying it will ensure that no vested interests is able to create a fake and false narrative with "oblique motives". In an affidavit filed in response to a PIL, which has been listed for hearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde, the state government said it is important that the investigation is carried out by an independent central agency.

UP Government Accepts Hathras Family Plea, Round-The-Clock Security Outside Victim's House
The Uttar Pradesh government deployed round-the-clock security outside the house of the Hathras victim, accepting her family's demands on Monday. As per Superintendent of Police Vineet Jaiswal, two women sub-inspectors and six women constables have been stationed there. "Two security personnel have been deployed for the security of the victim's brother. Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel are also camping outside the house."
Rectify Mistake, Focus On Ensuring Justice To Hathras Victim's Family: Mayawati Tells UP Government
BSP chief Mayawati advised the UP government today to seriously concentrate on ensuring justice to the family of the Dalit woman allegedly gang-raped and killed in Hathras or it will become difficult to prevent heinous incidents. She stopped just short of calling the Yogi Adityanath government''s claim of some people trying to incite caste conflict in the aftermath of the incident an "electoral trick". However, she added, the government can "still rectify its mistake" and provide justice to the victim''s family. On Sunday, Uttar Pradesh police lodged at least 19 FIRs across the state on charges ranging from attempt to trigger caste conflict to sedition in connection with the incident.
Comparison Of Hathras, Baran Cases "Totally Unfair": Ashok Gehlot
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday accused the BJP of using the incident of the alleged rape of two minor sisters from Rajasthan's Baran district to divert attention from the Hathras gang-rape case and said a comparison between the two is "totally unfair". The state government is open to BJP leaders visiting Baran so that they know what the truth is, Ashok Gehlot told PTI.
