'Why Malign Arun Jaitley On His Birthday?': Kirti Azad on Cricket Row

Kirti Azad said he "staunchly" worked for the BJP for years and "a lot of people are jealous".

New Delhi: Suspended BJP lawmaker Kirti Azad today rubbished his party's allegation that he had highlighted alleged corruption in Delhi's cricket body DDCA at the instigation of the Congress party.

He also insisted that his campaign was against corruption, not Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who headed the DDCA or Delhi and District Cricket Association for 13 years till 2013.

"Why are you dragging in Arun Jaitley? It is his birthday today, you are defaming him by bringing up his name again and again. I don't understand why his name is coming in again and again. This is about corruption in sports," Mr Azad said at a press conference.

Mr Azad was suspended by his party last week and accused of indiscipline after he all but named Mr Jaitley for what he called deep-rooted financial irregularities in the cricket body.

"I have not done anything against party...but I want to expose those who are corrupt in the DDCA," Mr Azad said, adding, ""I had brought a lot of things (corruption matters) before the then head, but nobody cared."

Claiming that he had personally investigated corruption in the cricket body, Mr Azad said he had loyally worked for the BJP for years and "a lot of people are jealous".

Mr Azad had written to his party president Amit Shah on Friday asking on what grounds the party has acted against him.

The letter, sent two days after the BJP lawmaker's suspension, pointed out that the party has not mentioned the charges that he has indirectly aimed at Mr Jaitley.

"As you have not mentioned DDCA corruption, I believe that the party has nothing to do with this matter and is purely out of its purview...," Mr Azad writes, refuting the BJP's allegation of "indiscipline" and bringing the party "disrepute," and asking for "an opportunity to clear his name on serious charges of anti-party activity."
