Lucknow: Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his "raincoat" barb at his predecessor Dr Manmohan Singh, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today said that the PM liked "peeping into others' bathrooms".
"I understand that Modi ji likes to read janampatri (horoscope), search Google and peep into the bathrooms of people...but he is a failure as a Prime Minister... He (Modi) can do this (peeping into bathrooms) in his free time," Mr Gandhi, 46, said at a joint press conference with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav whose Samajwadi Party has partnered with the Congress for elections in Uttar Pradesh which is voting today in the first of seven phases.
The Congress No 2's stinging remark was in reference to the Prime Minister's comments in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday where he, while attacking the Congress over corruption scandals during the UPA government's term, said, "There is not a single black mark against him despite all the corruption. Only Doctor Saab (Manmohan Singh) knows how to bathe with a raincoat in the bathroom."
The PM's remarks have drawn intense criticism from the Congress which has said that it will not allow him to speak in parliament till he apologises.
Akhilesh Yadav, who unveiled the alliance's common minimum programme today, joined Mr Gandhi in attacking the Prime Minister. "Some people do mann ki baat but no kaam ki baat (all talk, no actions)," the 43-year old sarcastically remarked, referring to the PM's monthly radio programme.
The Chief Minister also had a word of advice for the Prime Minister. "It's not good to be so angry. This only implies nervousness," Mr Yadav said, in an apparent reference to the PM's remarks at a rally in Uttarakhand on Friday, where he warned of exposing the Congress, saying "I have your entire janampatri (horoscope)".
In Uttar Pradesh, the PM is leading his party's campaign against Dalit icon Mayawati and the political alliance of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav with Mr Gandhi's Congress party.
The BJP amassed 72 of the state's 80 parliamentary seats in the general election, and its result will be used to gauge whether the PM is likely to win a second term.
