Heat wave returns in parts of north India

New Delhi: Northern India on Sunday had mixed luck with the weather as rain and thundershowers in some places in Uttar Pradesh brought the mercury down even as Punjab and Haryana saw a return of heat wave after few days of relief.

In Delhi, the maximum temperature continued below the 40-degree level for a third consecutive day, settling at 39.8 degrees Celsius, although the minimum was a notch higher from Saturday.

Humidity in air fluctuated between 40 and 44 per cent with the MeT department predicting partly cloudy skies tomorrow with a possibility of thundery development.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh brought temperatures down in Moradabad, Bareilly, Lucknow and Meerut divisions.

The highest temperature in the state, at 43 degrees, was recorded at Banda and Orai.

However, Rajasthan had no respite from the heat with Churu and Sriganganagar recording an identical 46.4 degrees as the blistering summer continued to affect normal life.

No relief from heat wave conditions was reported anywhere in the state although light drizzle and squalls in the last 24 hours occurred at Jodhpur and Kota districts.

Punjab and Haryana, too, had heat woes as temperatures rose in the two neighbouring states after three days of respite.

Hisar in Haryana was the hottest place across the two states with a maximum of 45 degrees, three notches above normal. The Union Territory of Chandigarh recorded a high of 37.7 degrees.

In Punjab, Amritsar sizzled at 44.4 degrees, again up by three notches from the normal, while Ludhiana and Patiala reported maximums of 43.2 and 39 degrees, respectively.

The forecast for the two states is for dust storms or thunderstorms along with light to moderate rain at isolated places.
