Most parts of Gujarat continued to reel under severe heat wave conditions on Tuesday, with Ahmedabad recording the maximum temperature of 46.9 degrees Celsius, city's hottest day since 2010, the Meteorological Department said.
"Severe heat wave conditions continue in most parts of north Gujarat and Kutch region, which means in many parts the temperature may go up to 47 degrees Celsius. The condition is likely to continue till May 21," Jayanta Sarkar, director of Ahmedabad meteorological centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD), said.
Maximum temperature recorded in Ahmedabad on Tuesday was 46.9 degrees Celsius, which was the highest in the last six years. In 2010, the city had recorded the highest temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius, he added.
At 47.6 degrees Celsius, Idar in Sabarkantha district recorded the maximum temperature in the state, while in Gandhinagar it was 47 degrees Celsius, the IMD data said.
Mr Sarkar said the severe heat wave condition has been caused due to the movement of north westerly wave.
"We have issued a red alert, which will continue till tomorrow. We can get some respite from May 21 because of westerly movement of wind, which is expected to bring moisture that will reduce temperature," he said.
