New Delhi:

Heavy rain and thunderstorm in Delhi and its adjoining areas early this morning led to massive traffic jams and affected flight operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.

Trees got uprooted in some parts of the national capital and traffic jams were reported in various stretches, including ITO, DND and near AIIMS, on the first working day of the week.

According to the weather department, this was the first moderate-intensity storm of this season.

Between 5:40 am till 7 am, the temperature in the city fell by 11 degrees Celsius, from 29 degrees Celsius to 18 degrees Celsius, news agency ANI reported quoting the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The airport authorities have requested the passengers to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.

"Due to bad weather, flight operations at Delhi airport are affected. Passengers are requested to get in touch with the airline concerned for updated flight information," Delhi Airport tweeted.

Airline companies tweeted that the bad weather in Delhi may affect departures and arrivals at the airport as they requested their passengers to keep a check on their flight status.

In an earlier tweet, the IMD said vulnerable structures and kutcha houses could suffer damages due to the thunderstorm, and that traffic disruptions are likely.

It also predicted thundershower with moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with speeds of 60-90 Km/h would continue to occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and NCR during the next two hours.

Strong winds and heavy rain uprooted trees in parts of Delhi which resulted in roads getting blocked.
