Heavy rains kill 34, many rivers above danger mark in North India

New Delhi: Incessant rain lashed parts of North India on Sunday where many rivers were running above the danger mark even as the toll due to the heavy downpour in Uttarakhand reached 34.

The capital Delhi recorded a maximum of 35.5 degree Celsius, two more than normal and a minimum of 27.5 degree Celsius, one more than the usual. The city received 0.8 mm of rain.

In Uttarakhand, Indo-Tibetian Border Police and police personnel searched debris of flattened homes and dug rubbles to look for more bodies in the rain-ravaged state.

Six people were still missing in the Uttarkashi district, a top government official said.

Twenty three workers of the state-run UJVN Ltd's Assi Ganga hydel project, who went missing early on Saturday following a cloud burst in the upper hills of Uttarkashi district, have now been declared dead.

During the past two days, incessant rains battered the hill state triggering landslides, cloud bursts and flash floods which flattened homes and stranded hundreds of pilgrims with the Chardham Yatra coming to a grinding halt.

Major rivers in Uttar Pradesh have crossed the danger mark as the monsoon remained active over the state bringing continuous rainfall in many areas.


Rivers like Sharda and Ghagra have crossed the danger mark due to which flood looms large in various parts, official sources said in Lucknow.


According the report of the Central Water Commission, the Sharda is flowing one meter above the danger mark at Palliakalan in Kheri district while the Ghagra is flowing above the mark at Elgin Bridge in Barabanki, Ayodhya in Faizabad and Turtipar in Ballia districts.


Similarly, river Rapti is flowing above the danger mark at Bhinga in Shravasti, and the river Budhi Rapti is flowing at danger mark at Siddharthnagar, the report said.

The water level in the river Ganga is rising in Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur, Dalmau, Allahabad, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Ghazipur and Ballia while river Yamuna is flowing at danger mark in Mavi and rising in Naini in Allahabad district.


Twenty four people trapped due to flash floods were rescued in Jammu and Kashmir, where dozens of houses were flooded along with several acres of agriculture lands. Several houses in low-lying areas of Jammu, Samba, Reasi and Udhampur districts have been flooded.

A flash flood alert has been sounded in Jammu region, where intermittent overnight rains resulted in the flooding of rivers on Saturday.

Water levels in Chenab, Tawi, Ujh and Basantar rivers are flowing above the danger mark, they said.
