Srinagar: Restrictions have been imposed in several parts of Srinagar to prevent protests on the third death anniversary of Afzal Guru, the Parliament attack convict who was hanged at Tihar Jail on February 9 three years ago.

Most of the separatist leaders who have called for a strike today have been put under house arrest. Shops, business establishment are closed and traffic is very thin on the roads.

Hundreds of security personnel and anti-riot squads have been deployed as part of precautionary measure.  

In Sopore, the hometown of Afzal Guru, the security is on high alert. Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed mainly in down town areas of Srinagar and neighbouring  Maisuma.

"We want to maintain law and order situation and prevent any damage to public property as some miscreants may try to cause," said a senior security officer.

Afzal Guru was hanged at Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013 and was buried somewhere inside the jail. Since then political groups and family is demanding mortal remains of Guru.
