Heavy snowfall has affected vehicular traffic along the Srinagar Jammu National Highway - the only road link that connects Kashmir valley with the rest of country. Around one feet of snow has accumulated in the areas around Banihal Tunnel that divides the Valley with Chenab region.
Officials say a number of vehicles including passenger buses and taxis were stranded along the highway this morning but most of them have been cleared despite continuous snowfall.
"The traffic is moving slowly because slippery road conditions. While snow clearance machines have been pressed into service since early morning, the continuous snowfall is affecting the smooth traffic along the highway" an official said.
It has been snowing in the upper reaches of Kashmir since yesterday evening, bringing an end to a dry spell for the cold in the Valley.
Heavy snowfall was received along Pirpanjal region which has affected normal life in several areas of Poonch and Rajouri districts. The Mughal road which connects Pirpanjal with the Valley has already been closed for last over one month.
The famous health resorts Gulmarg and Pahalgam have also received fresh snowfall, bringing cheer among the tourists and skiers. Gulmarg is one of the best Skiing destinations in the world.
In Srinagar and the most of the plains in Kashmir, it has raining since last evening. The weatherman has predicted rains and snowfall for next two days.
