Chennai:
The Chennai police have finally filed a chargesheet against William Heum for digital child pornography. Heum was arrested in November last year under India's new IT Act.
Because the police did not file a chargesheet against him within 90 days of arresting him, Heum was granted bail. The only reason Heum is still in jail is because he did not provide the money required for his bail.
The Chennai police are expected to now challenge the bail granted already to him.
Heum has lived in India for 30 years. The Dutch national has been accused of uploading images of child pornography on the Internet. If found guilty, he faces upto seven years in prison and a fine of 10 lakhs.
Heum is also on bail in another case where he has been accused of sexually abusing children at an orphanage run by him in Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu. He was arrested in 2002 for allegedly having sex with minors.
