Punjab and Haryana High Court freezes the 10 per cent reservation awarded to EBC.
Chandigarh:
The 10 per cent reservation awarded to a specially created Economically Backward Section in jobs and education by the earlier Congress government in Haryana has been put on freeze by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The court accepted a petition that argued that going by a Supreme Court ruling, reservation cannot be granted solely on the basis of economic backwardness.
The petitioners had also cited a Gujarat High Court order passed in August, quashing the quota given to the economically backward sections by the state government.
Advocate Neeraj Gupta, who represented the petitioner, told the media that the court accepted both pleas, stayed the quota and issued notice to the state government.
In 2013, the Hooda government had created a special EBC category for people from the general category who were economically weak, with annual income that's less than Rs 2.40 lakh. Such people, who were not getting any reservation, were given the benefit of reservation.
Under the rule, Rajputs, Brahmins, Mahajans and Punjabis received 10 per reservation months before the state assembly elections in 2014.
