Hillary arrives on Friday; terror, Pak to be on talk list

New Delhi:

India and the US would launch a new chapter in the strategic partnership when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton undertakes a visit to the country from Friday during which Pakistan, terrorism and other regional matters are expected to figure prominently in the discussions.

On her first trip here as the Secretary of State, Clinton will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and hold talks with External Affairs Minister S M Krishna. She will also meet UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Leader of the Opposition L K Advani.

She will reach Mumbai where she will interact with the leaders of Indian industry. She will also pay tributes to those killed in the 26/11 terror attacks at the Taj Hotel.

On Sunday, Clinton will be in Delhi where she will address two functions on climate and agriculture.

She will have detailed discussions with Krishna during which the two sides are expected to look at ways in which the strategic ties could be taken to a new plane.

Bilateral cooperation in civil nuclear field, defence and trade and investment are expected to figure prominently in the talks. The two sides would also focus on terrorism, particularly that emanating from Pakistan, climate change, global economic crisis.

Ahead of her visit, Clinton has said, "We are starting a strategic dialogue between myself and the new Minister of External Affairs."
