Himachal: Truck falls into gorge in Chamba; 32 dead

Chamba: Around 32 passengers were killed and several others were injured when a truck carrying them plunged into a 300-feet deep gorge in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, police said on Thursday.

The truck was going from Chaura to Shekhpur and plunged into the gorge at 12.30 am. The passengers were reportedly returning from a wedding function.

While 30 people died on the spot, two persons succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital.

Chamba district police chief, who reached the spot on Thursday morning, said the truck was carrying about 40 people. He said the injured persons have been rushed to RP Government Medical College while bodies of the deceased were being recovered from the gorge.

Meanwhile in another accident in the district, nine employees of the same company were killed on the spot when a pick-up van rolled into a ditch near Bharmaur on Wednesday night. The van was going to Bharmaur to drop the employees after the night shift.

Himachal Vidhan Sabha Speaker, who represents Bharmaur constituency, has expressed grief over the accident and asked the district administration to provide immediate relief to the affected families. (With PTI Inputs)
