The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested a Home Ministry official for allegedly offering Rs 2 crore as bribe to a senior agency officer to influence a case. The ministry officer was arrested with Rs 16 lakh in his possession, the agency said.
Dheeraj Kumar Singh, a section officer in the Ministry of Home Affairs, was allegedly trying to influence a case. He had allegedly approached the agency's senior officer with an offer of Rs 2 crore to settle the matter.
The CBI official, however, alerted the agency's top officials about the bribe offer.
The agency laid a trap and arrested Singh and a private person, identified as Dinesh Chand Gupta, with the alleged bribe money of Rs 16 lakh from their possession when they came to make the payment, news agency PTI reported.
Following the arrest in the early morning, the agency carried out searches at the residence of Singh and Gupta which resulted in the recovery of incriminating documents, CBI sources said.
The agency is investigating the case further.
