Panchkula, Haryana: Honeypreet Insan, the "adopted daughter" of jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, was sent to six-day police custody today by a court in Haryana. She has been charged with sedition and rioting.

Honeypreet, originally Priyanka Taneja, was arrested yesterday on the highway near Chandigarh after a month-long chase. She was questioned at a police station till 3 am, say sources.

Honeypreet was produced before a court amid tight security, including commandos.

She pleaded not guilty to charges of inciting violence, said her lawyer. "Honeypreet was with the Dera head after his conviction. In no way she was involved in inciting violence," her lawyer SK Garg Narwana said today.

Last night, the 36-year-old was questioned for four-and-a-half hours on her role in the violence by Dera supporters on August 25 after Ram Rahim was declared guilty of raping two followers. The police say 38 people were killed in the rioting in Panchkula and other cities.

Honeypreet is also accused of trying to help Ram Rahim escape after his guilty verdict.

Panchkula Police Commissioner AS Chawal said that she was evasive. Honeypreet topped the Haryana police's list of 43 'most wanted' criminals.

Another woman arrested along with Honeypreet, identified as Sukhdeep Kaur, was also sent to six-day police custody.

Honeypreet had earlier spoken to the News 24 channel and denied the charges against her.

The prosecution had asked for 14-day police custody on the grounds that Honeypreet knew four or five people who could be among the prime accused in the case.
