Ending the suspense, the Congress high command finally decided the names of chief ministers of Maharashtra and Haryana late on Saturday night. The decision was taken after an hour-long meeting at the house of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
The incumbent Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan, has been asked to continue for the second term, while Bhoopinder Singh Hooda is all set to start his second term as Haryana CM.
Intense tussle has been going on in both the states since the Assembly election results came on October 22. And after hectic parleys and lobbying the Congress high command gave its nod to the names of Chavan and Hooda.
The decisions were announced by the observers of the respective states, A K Antony (Maharashtra) and Prithviraj Chavan (Haryana).
Announcing the decision about Haryana at 10, Janpath, Prithviraj Chavan said, "The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has authorised the Congress president to nominate the Chief Minister of the state and she has asked Bhoopinder Singh Hooda to continue as the chief minister."
In the 90-member Haryana Assembly, the Congress had gained the support of seven Independent candidates taking its tally to 47, crossing the half-way mark of 45. (Haryana elections: Results)
With 146 MLAs in a 288-seat Maharashtra Assembly and a clear majority, the Congress-NCP combine is all set to form government for the third consecutive term. (Maharashtra elections: Results)
