United Nations: Amid a war of words between India and Pakistan, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hopes that the leaders of the two countries will continue to engage with each other and try to resolve their differences "peacefully and amicably".
"Well, our hope in this, is that the leaders of the two countries will continue to engage with each other and try to resolve the situation peacefully and amicably and we will see where they go with that," Mr Ban's Deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters here yesterday during a press briefing.
Mr Haq said this in response to a question on tensions between India and Pakistan and whether Mr Ban will call upon the two countries to engage in a dialogue.
US Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday talked to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed regional situation including the recent increase in tension between India and Pakistan.
Mr Kerry made the call to Mr Sharif soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Pakistani counterpart and greeted him on the eve of holy month of Ramzan.
India and Pakistan have been involved in a war of words recently with leaders from both sides exchanging sharp comments after Mr Modi's critical remarks about Pakistan during his Dhaka visit and in the wake of India's military action in Myanmar.
