Mumbai:
City police, probing the firing on hotelier B R Shetty, on Tuesday arrested two suspected sharp shooters in Punjab, allegedly associated with gangster Chhota Rajan gang, taking the number of arrests made in the case to five.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of crime branch officials reached Jalandhar in Punjab and laid a trap for the accused Dilip Upadhyay and Talvinder Singh.
The duo was apprehended by the police team, an official said, adding, "The accused were produced before a local court there that granted transit remand to them till November 30."
Based on the inputs, police teams had earlier also travelled to Uttar Pradesh to nab the absconders but in vain, as the duo got wind of the investigators and managed to escape.
The accused would now be brought to Mumbai before November 30 to be produced before the court concerned in Mumbai.
On October 3, Shetty, who runs a chain of hotels in Mumbai, Dubai and Malaysia, was shot at near Funcity in suburban Andheri. He received bullet injury on his shoulder and is still recovering.
During the course of investigation, police had arrested a property dealer Nityanand Nayak from Dharavi area, who spilled the beans about other accused.
Subsequently, police nabbed Selvan Challappan Daniel, who revealed that the conspiracy was hatched by his cousin brother, Chhota Rajan aide Rohit Tangappan alias Kalia, who was in jail in another case.
Through court orders, investigators took the custody of Tangappan in the firing case.
The dispute is prima facie related to a huge chunk of SRA project in Dharavi, which a reputed builder was eyeing, police said.
Shetty had put up few of his posters in Dharavi during the Ganesh Chaturthi and the builder, who was eyeing the project, thought Shetty may become a hurdle.
