In 2012, a 16-year-old girl in Haryana's Karnal district was abducted and gang-raped in a moving car while she was walking to school. Three weeks later, the two men who had gang-raped the teen, raped and killed her mother, says the police.
A year later, the two men are still being tried in a fast-track court. The decision to fight for justice has pitted them against a hostile neighbourhood. They are Dalits, the men arrested are upper-caste. (Read more)
"No one speaks to me," the teen gang-rape survivor said. "I don't talk to them. Or visit anyone. I just stay at home. What is the point? Nobody talks nicely to me... even my uncles. It would be better to just leave this village."
She says she wants to study. "Though I am at home, I can do better than those girls who are attending school. I can still get better marks than my classmates. But I don't have money to buy books."
