HRD Ministry plans to introduce grade system in CBSE schools

HRD Ministry is planning to introduce grade system in CBSE schools from the next academic year with no pass or fail category.

"The current system (of marks and percentage) leads to an unhealthy competition among the students. We are hoping to implement the new grading system from the next academic year," a senior HRD Ministry official said.

CBSE chief Vineet Joshi said the grades will cover a range of marks through which the students will be assessed.

Students getting above 90 per cent will be given A+ Grade, while students getting above 80 per cent will be accorded A grade. The last grade will be E, which will be less than 30 marks.

"The system and the range of marks for grades are being finetuned and we will finalise it soon. The grades will be accorded based on absolute marks," Joshi said.

He said there will not be pass or fail category under the new system which will help students not to develop any complex over their marks.

Joshi said once the Class Xth boards are made optional, the CBSE will introduce the concept of on-demand exams under which students can take exams anytime they wish.

He said if a student gets Grade E in one subject then he will have to appear only for that exam. "He doesn't have to appear for all the subjects. There won't be any pass or fail once the grade system comes," he said.

The HRD Ministry official said the students can take the exams according to their wish and it will help them to evaluate their performance.

He said the decision to make the Class Xth board optional was taken so that a good system of competition and continuous assessment takes place.
