New Delhi:
HS Brahma, who currently holds the position of Election Commissioner, is likely to succeed VS Sampath as the next Chief Election Commissioner of India.
The government seems to have followed the convention of proposing the appointment of the senior-most Election Commissioner as the Chief Election Commissioner.
The proposal will be sent to President Pranab Mukherjee for final approval.
A retired IAS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre's 1975 batch, Mr Brahma hails from the state of Assam. He assumed charge as Election Commissioner on August 24, 2010, post his retirement from the position of Secretary in the Ministry of Power.
The Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners are appointed by the President for a tenure of six years or up to the age of 65. The Chief Election Commissioner can be removed from office only through impeachment by Parliament.
