The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh government over the reported death of an asthma patient in an ambulance while he was being rushed to a hospital in Bijnor as the oxygen cylinder was empty.
Taking a serious view of the alleged medical negligence, the Commission has issued a notice to Secretary, Department of Medical Health and Family Welfare of the state government, and sought a report within four weeks, the NHRC said in a statement.
The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report carried on October 10 which stated that Mohd Aslam, 55, a resident of Chandpur area of Bijnor died after the oxygen cylinder was empty in the ambulance in which he was being rushed to a hospital after suffering a severe asthama attack.
Reportedly, the relatives of the patient protested and the Chief Medical Officer promised a probe in the matter.
The Commission has observed that it is "shocked to peruse the painful news report that a human life could not be saved even after timely arrival of the ambulance because the oxygen cylinder, which is the most crucial and important life saving apparatus, was not functional".
"This is a case of sheer negligence on the part of the concerned officers amounting to violation of right to life of the patient," it said.
