New Delhi: Hundreds of people marched in Delhi today to demand justice for the 23-year-old medical student gang-raped in a moving bus and greater security for women.
The 'Mahila Suraksha Samman March' was flagged off by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit from Bal Bhawan and went all the way to Rajghat, where Mrs Dikshit led the group in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi.
The march was organised by the Delhi government with the Delhi Commission for Women. There was heavy police presence along the route.
At Jantar Mantar, a modest gathering continued the ongoing agitation for 'Amanat' (NOT her real name). Delhi and other cities have been seeing a wave of demonstrations and public gatherings in protest against the gang-rape on December 16 and to demand stringent anti-rape laws in the country.
Amanat died in a Singapore hospital on December 29 after a brave fight to survive that even amazed her doctors.
Her torture and eventual death has shaken the nation as well as the central government, which has set up a commission to review laws on crimes against women. The Delhi government has set up a helpline for women (number 181) in the chief minister's office and put more public buses, with guards, on the roads at night.
