Imphal: Hundreds of inter-state passengers and freight trucks were stranded on key national highway to Imphal due to a 24-hour strike called by tribal activists in Manipur to protest alleged police "excesses" on slogan-shouting supporters in Delhi.
The strike that ended on Thursday midnight was followed by the start of the 10-day economic blockade.
"This strike is in protest against police brutalities on peaceful demonstrators protesting against politicians who met central leaders in Delhi on the three bills passed by the assembly but to which the presidential assent was withheld," a strike supporter said.
The movement on key highway in Senapati district that connects Manipur with Assam via Nagaland was severely affected after a total shutdown.
Police were escorting the stranded vehicles to ensure the safety of passengers, a senior police officer said told IANS.
Inter-state passenger buses as well as freight trucks coming from Guwahati and Dimapur were blocked at Moa gate and Senapati headquarter by shutdown supporters.
Stranded buses were stationed at the Senapati public ground and freight trucks were lined up along the highway near Mao gate and just beyond the Senapati police out post.
Besides, the Kangleipak Students Association too has called for a general strike in Manipur from 5 pm on Saturday till Monday evening.
