Railways Minister Sadananda Gowda today said that he will introduce pre-cooked and "ready-to-eat meals of reputed brands" on trains across the country. (Highlights of Rail Budget 2014)
In addition to providing filtered (RO) drinking water on trains and at stations, the minister, while presenting the Railways Budget, vowed penalties, including the cancellation of contracts, for caterers who are found supplying unhygienic food to passengers. "If the service is not up to the standard set, especially in hygiene and taste, severe action would be initiated against the vendors including cancellation of contract," he said.
Mr Gowda also set food courts will be set up at major stations and passengers will be able to order meals from these while on-board using text messages and emails.
He said this service will debut soon between New Delhi-Amritsar and New Delhi-Jammu Tawi sections.
