Hurt Jairam says 'People think of me as Raavan'

New Delhi: The repeated conflicts with other ministers in the Cabinet have Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh seeing red. At a meeting on climate change in Bhopal, Ramesh said, "People call me Raavan...or someone who is against development.  Every ministry considers my role to be an interference. You thank me, but all I get is brickbats and criticism."

Ramesh has run into trouble with ministries, most recently Civil Aviation, over environmental clearances for new projects.

Earlier this week, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel alleged that Ramesh's policies are causing inordinate delays for the new airport planned for Mumbai.  "We can't be overly obsessive about environmental issues. We can't give priority to 50-100 acres of degradation over a large infrastructure project," said Patel to NDTV.

Ramesh countered that he wanted more information from the Maharashtra government on the environmental impact of the Navi Mumbai airport.  The project will destroy 400 acres of forests, and force the diversion of two rivers in the area, say sources in the Environment Ministry.
