Husband stabs wife to death with a meat cleaver

Toronto: An Indian-origin woman was butchered to death with a meat cleaver on the outskirts of Vancouver. Police have identified the victim as Ravinder Kaur Bhangu, 24, who worked as an administrative assistant at the weekly newspaper Sach Di Awaaz.

According to Sukhminder Cheema, a journalist who worked at the paper, Mrs Bhangu was killed by her husband Sunny Bhangu. Ms Cheema says she was a witness to the attack.

"The guy came to the newspaper office and suddenly pulled out a meat cleaver...then he stabbed her with the meat cleaver. She died on the spot."

Police have arrested the 26-year-old Bhangu and took him into custody.

A news report from the Vancouver Sun quoted friends of Mrs Bhangu as saying that she was going through problems in her marriage. She had moved in with her aunt two or three months ago.

"You can say that it was an honour killing," said Cheema. "So far nobody has heard that she had a boyfriend, or anything like that.  Maybe he was angry because she left him," she was quoted by the Vancouver Sun newspaper as saying.
