A week after a teen's gang-rape in Hyderabad by five people including minors from political families, the Innova car in which she was reportedly assaulted has been found from a farmhouse.
The white car is suspected to have been cleaned after the assault, the police said on Sunday after tracking it down to a farmhouse in Moinabad on the outskirts of the Telangana capital. A forensic team is scouring the car for clues.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that this was an official car recently assigned to a politician. It had not yet been registered.
Four of the five accused have been taken into custody, two of them teens. The fifth accused is still missing. One of the minors caught by the police is the son of a local leader of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's Telangana Rashtra Samithi party (TRS). Another minor arrested yesterday is the son of a politician from Sanga Reddy.
Amid spiraling outrage and political clashes over the gang-rape, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Sunday ordered the Chief Secretary and the police chief to submit a report within two days.
On May 28, the 17-year-old girl was gang-raped allegedly in the car by the five, whom she had met at a pub where she had gone for a party.
Security footage that has gone viral shows the girl standing outside the pub with the suspected attackers. She was assaulted inside the car in the Jubilee Hills area of Hyderabad, an upscale neighbourhood. The five accused took turns to rape her, while the others stood guard, the police said.
Another accused, identified as Saduddin Malik, was detained on Friday.
The police have yet to respond to the allegation of BJP leader Raghunandan Rao, who put out a video on Saturday and demanded action against the son of a local MLA who he claimed had sexually assaulted the girl. He claimed the video proved the involvement of the MLA's son in the girl's assault, which had been denied by the police.
Mr Rao released the video clip and the photographs a day after the police dismissed the claim as baseless. "We have identified five culprits as per CCTV footage and the statement of the survivor, and the MLA's son is not one of them, "Joel Davis, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Zone, had said on Friday.
