New Delhi: Yakub Memon's wife is expected to fly out of Mumbai to Nagpur this evening, where her husband is lodged in the central jail and will be hanged tomorrow if his final mercy petition is rejected by the President.
Memon's brother Suleiman and cousin Usman, waited on different floors of a Nagpur hotel on Wednesday for the Supreme Court's verdict on his petition against his execution for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, in which 257 people were killed.
Soon after the Supreme Court rejected that petition, Suleiman Memon said, "I have full faith in the judiciary. I have full faith in the almighty," also requesting the media repeatedly to, "Please leave me alone."
Suleiman is now meeting his brother at the Nagpur Jail, while Usman is outside in a waiting room.
Yakub Memon is scheduled to be hanged tomorrow, July 30, at 7 am. Sources at the jail said Yakub, who turns 54 tomorrow, will be woken up at 3 am and will be taken to the yard where executions take place after a bath and medical check-up.
Even as the Supreme Court was giving verdict today, Yakub made a fresh clemency plea to President Pranab Mukherjee, who had last year rejected a mercy plea by Yakub's brother on his behalf.
Security has been tightened around the jail where Yakub Memon is lodged. In Mumbai, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis met with the state's top cops to discuss law and order.
Yakub Memon is the only one of 11 people whose death sentence in the 1993 blasts case has been upheld. The sentences of the others were commuted to life imprisonment.
The chartered accountant was arrested in 1994 and was in 2007 found guilty of both plotting the attack and executing the 1993 blasts. His brother Ibrahim Memon, also known as Tiger Memon, is the main accused in the case along with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, and is missing since 1993.
