"My stress buster is Carnatic music and coffee," says Justice HL Dattu
New Delhi:
A Supreme Court judge understands the pain of the common man, and so, every case is important, the new Chief Justice of India, Justice HL Dattu, has said.
In an interaction with the media shortly after his swearing in on Sunday, Justice Dattu said, "We can understand what a common citizen of India feel when we, the last court, tell him 'no'. So every case is important for us. I sit as a common man in the court."
Consequently, for a judge of the highest court in the land, a 16-hour workday is normal.
"A lot of hard work goes into our preparation, because it is the last court and everyone comes with a lot of expectations. Every sensitive case we deal with separately," said the judge, who has been heading the bench monitoring investigations into the 2G spectrum scam.
Congress leaders Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Rajeev Shukla were the only prominent leaders of the opposition who attended the swearing-in programme.
But the new Chief Justice, who joined the Supreme Court in December 2008, refused to comment on the controversy surrounding the attempt to scrap the collegium system of appointment of judges. "Mine is the best institution in the world," he had earlier said.
So given the pressure of the job, how does he deal with it?
