New Delhi:
Over 1500 professors of the elite IIT will go on a hunger strike for the first time on Thursday after the Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal refused to agree to pay hike.
Despite being on a strike, professors will not boycott classes.
The IIT faculty has submitted a memorandum on its charter of demands, including withdrawal of 40 per cent cap on promotion of professors to senior grade.
Sibal, though, said the government wants to give more freedom to the elite institutes provided they come up with futuristic vision to achieve excellence.
The HRD Minister further said the vision should reflect their strategy on how to raise their income level so that they do not rely on the government and achieve excellence.
