Dehradun: The IIT-Roorkee students who were recently expelled for under-performance by the premier institute, were today allowed to appear in a re-examination following court's order.

"The expelled students who turned up at the institute to appear in the re-examination were allowed to take the test," Dean (Academic) Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, Pramod Agarwal told PTI on the phone.

However, Dr Agarwal could not specify the number of such students.

In a reprieve to the students, Uttarakhand High Court had allowed them to appear in a re-examination scheduled to be held at the institute from today if they wanted and also directed the administration of the premier institute to file a counter-affidavit on a petition challenging its decision to expel them.

The interim order was issued by Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia yesterday on a petition filed by a group of 46 expelled students challenging IIT Senate's recent decision to expel 73 students on the ground that no other IIT in the country had a rule to expel students who score less than five CGPA in semester examinations.

The court has asked IIT-Roorkee administration to file its counter-affidavit before July 21 when the case is scheduled to come up again for hearing, counsel for the students Arvind Vashisth said.
