IITians plunge into UP politics

Lucknow: In UP, where politics is a mosaic of casteism, money and muscle power, a group of former IITians and MBA students are trying their luck with politics.

Techie Ajit shukla, first IIT then Infosys, is logging on to a new field - the tough politics of Uttar Pradesh.

His Bharat Punarnirman Dal, formed with other IITians three years ago, is all set to fight the UP Legislative Council elections in April.

",We supported three candidates in MLC elections in Andhra Pradesh and two of them won entirely on our support and this inspired us and gave us a cue that we should field similar candidates in the future,", said Ajit Shukla, National President, Bharat Punarnirman Dal.

The party's another candidate in Lucknow, Dr Shakti Kumar Pandey, is English professor at Awadh University and he is going to have his first shot at elections.

",There are Intellectuals, professionals, teachers, lawyers, who are with BPD. Since, it is a non-political election, networking and getting support from social organisations matters. It is not political support that is important,", said Dr Shakti Kumar Pandey, candidate.

In the caste ridden politics of UP, these former IITians may not have the money or the muscle power to win an election. But they are banking on the intelligentsia in the state to ensure a political future.
