In 24 days as Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav transfers over 1000 officers
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh's new Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has transferred more than a 1000 officers since he took over as the head of the state 24 days ago. Most of these are top ranking bureaucrats thought to be loyalists of former UP Chief Minister Mayawati. Reports suggest these transfers have created a complete chaos in the state machinery.

When the 38-year-old was sworn in, he had promised that improving law and order situation and rooting out corruption in the state besieged by crime would be his top priorities. He had also vowed to take on "unprecedented organised corruption" in the Mayawati regime.

On his first day as Chief Minister on March 15, Akhilesh made only minor changes, posting new faces in his secretariat. The flood gates opened soon after, and the top posts in the IAS and IPS establishments were shifted. Till date, more than 1,000 officials from the police and administrative services have been shifted from here to there, reportedly based on their "loyalty tilts".

The day he became the Chief Minister, Akhilesh had told the people of UP that his Samajwadi Party "will keep all the promises it made in its manifesto." The list of promises was long. But so far, the youngest Chief Minister of the state has proved to be a man of his words.

He had vowed to cleanse his party of "goonda-giri" or hooliganism. Keeping the promise, he expelled 10 of his partymen involved in the riot after his swearing-in ceremony in Lucknow.

He had promised a more responsive Chief Minister's office and has delivered on that front too - he has revived the tradition of weekly CM's janta darshan - every Wednesday from April 18, the doors of the Chief Minister's residence, 5 Kalidas Marg in Lucknow, will be thrown open to the people of Uttar Pradesh.

The move is being seen as a radical departure from the five years of no interaction of the Chief Minister with the people of Uttar Pradesh - for Akhilesh's predecessor Mayawati, the only source of feedback were a coterie of close aides and bureaucrats who had pushed her into further isolation by creating a security cover.
