In Amritsar, Rahul Gandhi's posters removed ahead of his visit
Chandigarh: The Amritsar municipal corporation has removed Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi's posters from the city. These posters were put up by Congress' students wing, the National Students Union of India or NSUI, for Mr Gandhi's visit to Punjab. The visit has been organised by NSUI.

Amritsar municipal authorities have said that they removed the posters because NSUI didn't take any permission. The Congress in in Opposition in Punjab, which is ruled by a Akali Dal-BJP alliance.

Mr Gandhi arrived in Amritsar this afternoon and met party cadres and office bearers of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC). He was received by Punjab Congress Chief Amarinder Singh and other senior party leaders from the state on his arrival at the airport.

During his stay in Amritsar, Mr Gandhi will address the office bearers of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), the members of the executive body, the district Congress committee presidents, the block presidents and present and former MPs and MLAs.

The Congress leader will also interact with the heads of the four frontal organisations of the party including the Punjab Mahilla Congress, the NSUI and the Punjab Youth Congress.

Later, Mr Gandhi will address a convention being organised by the Punjab Youth Congress on the Attari border.

On Thursday, Mr Gandhi will meet the former PCC and district presidents at the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee office.

Later in the day, he will address a students' rally being organised by the Punjab unit of the National Students' Union of India in the Punjab University.

Student organisations are divided about whether or not Mr Gandhi should be allowed to hold a rally on the university campus. Punjab University Student's Union (PUSU) has said that political functions cannot be allowed on the campus, and questioned the decision of university authorities to allow the rally.

A PUSU statement read: "We will protest against the decision to allow Rahul Gandhi's rally here."

Meanwhile, special arrangements are being made on the campus for Mr Gandhi's visit.

Tight security arrangements are being made by Chandigarh Police, the city administration and university authorities. Several restrictions will be in place during the Congress general secretary's visit in the city.

Hundreds of police personnel will be on duty. "We have made adequate security arrangements," Superintendent of Police Maneesh Chaudhary said.
