In Howrah, A Match Between BJP's Roopa Ganguly And Trinamool's Shukla

Roopa Ganguly says she is confident of a victory in the West Bengal elections.

Howrah: Across the Hooghly river from Kolkata, in the city of Howrah, the stage is set for a closely-watched showdown. This is where BJP's Roopa Ganguly, the Draupadi of Indian television, is taking on local cricket star Lakshmi Ratan Shukla who is contesting on a Trinamool ticket from the Howrah North seat.

Ms Ganguly, who is leading a fiery campaign, says she is confident of victory. She claims that the Trinamool has done nothing to improve living conditions of the citizens of Howrah in the last five years.

"If you just go on the roads and watch a couple of people in Bengal, just bystanders, you will see half the time they are very frustrated. Why is it like that? Nothing is working in Bengal and that's why people are angry," she told NDTV.

Lakshmi Ratan Shukla says Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's work in the last five years will pay off for him.

Lakshmi Ratan Shukla is contesting from the Horwah North seat.

Flung far from the world of cricket, he is going from door to door in the narrow lanes of Howrah canvassing for votes.

Occasionally he takes a small break from campaigning to indulge in a game of cricket with local children.

The demands of the constituency are more facilities like open spaces. "Cricket and politics are not too different. Earlier people wanted Lakshmi Ratan Shukla to play well and win. Even now the expectation is the same," Mr Shukla told NDTV.
